MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Foothills Elementary School in Maryville hosted an event where its second graders could learn valuable skills in the economic world, such as goods and services and consumers and producers.

"It's a great way to teach these skills to the students," Melissa Sonner, a teacher, said.

Market Day is held every year where students are given "tickets" that serve as money to shop. The students earn their tickets from good behavior or from selling their items or waivers.

Each student is given at least a month to prepare a good or service for the event. They determine the design of their project, the name and their price.

"The description doesn’t do it justice," Maria Greene, communications person for Maryville City Schools. "When I went last year, I was blown away by what the kids had done. The whole gym is filled and looks like a marketplace. I got a manicure, bought a bandana for my dog (that the little 2nd grader sewed by herself), and all kinds of things. The whole school gets to drop by to shop."

From selling candy to selling Taylor Swift bracelets to selling jewelry, Foothills' students were able to learn skills that they would take to the next grade.

There were about 160 second graders in attendance for the event.

Here are some goods and services that were on display:
