Mae Beavers drops out of gubernatorial race

In the Facebook post, Beavers said she has decided to suspend her campaign after "much deliberation," and is now looking forward to her retirement.

Former state Sen. Mae Beavers has ended her run to be Tennessee's next governor.

Beavers announced in a Facebook post Tuesday that she is suspending her gubernatorial campaign.

Beavers, a Republican, is from Mt. Juliet. She resigned her seat in the state Senate last year to campaign for governor full-time.

In the Facebook post, Beavers thanked her campaign volunteers and supporters, and said she has decided to suspend her campaign after "much deliberation."

"After criss-crossing the state and meeting thousands of fellow Tennesseans, it was not a light decision to make because you have embraced our conservative message whole-heartedly; however, it is the right choice to make," Beavers said.

"Also, I know entering the race has not been in vain as many of my heart-felt issues are now talking points of other candidates'," she said.

Beavers said she is now looking forward to her retirement. She served four terms in the Tennessee House before joining the Senate in 2002.
