Lonsdale Elementary holds 2nd Annual Zaevion Dobson Day

The second annual Zaevion Dobson event took place at Lonsdale Elementary on Wednesday afternoon.

People in Knox County gathered at Lonsdale Elementary Wednesday to remember the life and sacrifice of a 15-year-old boy who died shielding his friends from gunfire in December 2015.

County leaders dedicated Jan. 24 to Zaevion Dobson two years ago.

Officials said the date seemed appropriate because Dobson's football jersey number was 24 when he played at Fulton High School.

Fulton sophomore Zaevion Dobson, #24, plays against Knoxville Catholic High School in the 2015 4A football playoffs.

VFL and Author Derrick Furlow was this year's keynote speaker.

"Each and every one of them have the opportunity to be courageous daily and theirs is going to look different than what Zaevion's looked, but it's our job as people to display it in the way we talk, walk and act and when that's done this world will be a better place," Furlow said.

Furlow said he didn't know Dobson personally, but he's honored to be a part of this day of remembrance.

There was basketball, entertainment, a check presentation and Zenobia Dobson, Zaevion's mother, was there as well to talk to the children and members of the community.
