Local doctors offer free cancer screenings

A group of Knoxville doctors gave free colonoscopy exams Saturday to raise cancer awareness. Gastrointestinal Associates (GIA) provided free exams to 50 uninsured men and women. They have screened 250 people in the event's five year history, more than half of whom were treated for signs of cancer. Doctors say an early diagnosis is key to saving lives.

"If you catch cancer in the early stages or in the pre-stages, it's almost 100% curable," said GIA managing partner, Gene Overholt.

Colon cancer is the second deadliest form of cancer.
