Five-year-old recovering after being hit by car, mother advocates for safety measures on her street

Legaci Kirk is on the road to recovery after she was hit by a passing car while playing outside on her trike.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Legaci Rose Kirk is recovering after being hit by a car on Nov. 2. Her mother, Jala Jackson, is calling her quick recovery a miracle.

On that Saturday afternoon, Legaci and some of her friends were playing outside. A few minutes later, the other children ran inside and told Jala that Legaci had been hit by a car.

“She was laying face down and unconscious,” Jackson said. “Initially, I just didn’t think she was even here with us.”

Then, Legaci took a big gasp of air.

She was taken to the hospital where she was put into the intensive care unit. She had two fractured eye sockets, a deep cut on her face and a subarachnoid hemorrhage in her brain.

But, 10 days later, Jackson is calling her little girl a miracle.

“She’s awake and she’s eating candy,” she said. “Just from where we were last week to now, it’s God, honestly. He has put his hands on everyone involved.”

Legaci is on her way to making a full recovery and is set to go home this week. She said she is looking forward to being able to play with her 1-year-old brother again and make more TikToks.

Jackson said she hopes this incident will also open the door for more safety measures on her street, like speed bumps, and remind drivers not to get distracted.

"If we could advocate for those speed bumps, it could be prevented, so no other family has to go through this."
