KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Several law enforcement agencies in Knox County participated in an annual event on Monday, carrying "the flame of hope" to Powell High School in support of the Special Olympics.

The Knox County Torch Run was organized by the broader Tennessee Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics group, helping create different events on different days across the state. At each event, law enforcement officers run with a torch to a specific location, signifying support for the Special Olympics. Through the event, organizers hope to raise money and awareness about the state's Special Olympics.

The Knoxville Police Department, the Knox County Sheriff's Office and troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol ran around 2 miles to Powell High School on Monday. Every year, more than 150,000 law enforcement officers carry the torch across the U.S. at different events.

Young athletes with the Special Olympics of Greater Knoxville also got into the Olympic spirit on Monday. Elementary and middle school students also competed in track and field events, such as the 100-meter dash.
