KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Lakeshore Park is the most visited public park in Knoxville, according to its website.
The last two years have seen major renovations take place at the scenic park.
"We're excited to see the end of this phase and give park visitors a little bit of a break from construction," said Julieanne Foy, Executive Director of Lakeshore Park Conservancy.
The renovations include three new pavilions, two new playgrounds, an outdoor fitness center and many more. They are yet to open a new baseball complex and pickleball courts.
"I look back at two years ago when we set out and showed the community the master plan for the park," said Foy, "It just seemed like a dream and now that it's coming to fruition is so exciting."
Some park-goers have seen the changes come throughout the decades. Marla Higginbotham said she's been coming to the park for more than 29 years.
"I have been coming here for about 29 years," said Higginbotham, "I started when my children were young and they're 31 now."
Marla and her niece spent the morning watching their grandkids play on one of the newly built playgrounds.
"There's like three or four parks along the way. So as we're walking, they can play," said April Young, "It's great, they made it very family-oriented."
Park leaders said the changes bring places for everyone to enjoy.
"I think that folks will find that there really is something for everyone and it's not just busy places, it's not just for sports," said Foy. "There's lots of still beautiful places where you can sit and have a picnic and have quiet space and just enjoy nature here in the park."
It also gives families the opportunity to spend quality time with each other.
"It's great to be able to have a place where you can come as a family, as a unit and be able to do a variety of different things because it's important that you all stay engaged together," said Young.
