No. 15 Lady Vols beat Memphis in overtime, 84-74

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Lady Vols took on the Memphis Tigers inside Food City Center Monday night. 

Rickea Jackson did not play in the matchup due to a lower leg injury. Tennessee led to start the game, and the Lady Vols were up by ten with four minutes left in the first quarter. 

Shortly after, the Tigers went on an eight-point run at the end of the first quarter to tie up the score 17-17.

Jewel Spear knocked down a deep three to give the Vols a three-point lead, but fifth-year Memphis guard Madison Griggs scored one from beyond the arc right before the second quarter. The Tigers led at halftime, 36-32. Tennessee gave the ball up 13 times in the first half compared to Memphis’ seven turnovers.

Sara Puckett scored a three-pointer in the third quarter to put the Vols back in the lead, 42-40. The game went into overtime with both teams tied up at 69.

It was a neck-and-neck battle up until the final minute of overtime.

Jewel Spear and Destinee Wells secured the final few buckets of the night from the free throw line to give the Lady Vols a win, 84-74. Puckett led the team with 24 points, while Spear had 19 of her own. Powell also totaled 17 throughout the match-up. 

Tennessee will take on Troy on Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. That game will be inside the Food City Center.
