KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department set up a spot where people can meet up to sell or buy items from each other, and where guardians can meet for child custody exchanges.
The "safe exchange zone" is located at the Public Safety Complex at 1650 Huron Street. It's marked with a sign outside the building, offering spots where people can meet each other safely. The area is under 24-hour surveillance and is well-lit. Residents do not need to notify KPD to use the spot. They just need to park in a designated space and complete the exchange.
In a post on social media, KPD said more people may use the "safe exchange zone" as the holiday season approaches and more people try to find the best gifts for family members. Illegal transactions such as ones involving narcotics, hazardous materials or stolen property are prohibited, as are transactions involving guns, ammunition or explosives.
"Though the parking area is well-lit and under video surveillance, the KPD encourages residents to make exchanges during daylight hours if at all possible," KPD said. "Additionally, residents are encouraged to be vigilant of possible scams. If a deal seems too good to be true, it is more than likely a scam."
The police department also said people should bring friends or family members along for exchanges. They should also tell people where they are going and limit the amount of cash they carry.
