KPD identifies 2 killed after crash on Cedar Lane involving motorcycle and box truck

The motorcycle passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and the motorcyclist later died at the hospital, KPD said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — UPDATE (9/18 1:14 p.m.): The Knoxville Police Department identified the two victims killed in a motorcycle crash on Cedar Lane.

They were identified as 44-year-old Michael Scates and 43-year-old Alecia Vigander.

Update (9/16 8:30 a.m.): 

The Knoxville Police Department has released more details regarding a motorcycle wreck that killed two people. 

Just before 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, KPD responded to a crash involving a motorcycle and box truck on Cedar Lane near Central Avenue Pike. 

The motorcycle passenger, an adult woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcycle driver, an adult man, was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, according to KPD. 

Based on the preliminary investigation, it's believed the motorcycle was driving recklessly when it hit the truck, which was slowing down and preparing to make a right turn when the wreck happened, KPD said. 

The investigation is ongoing, according to KPD.

Previous (9/15 11:06 p.m.): The Knoxville Police Department said the person who was transported to the hospital after the crash passed away as a result of their injuries. 

The Knoxville Police Department said officers responded to a serious crash on Cedar Lane at Central Avenue Pike on Sunday night. KPD later said the crash involved a delivery box truck and a motorcycle with two riders. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and another was transported with critical injuries. 

"KPD crash reconstruction personnel are on scene and leading the investigation," KPD said. 

KPD asked those in the area to seek an alternate route if possible.

More information such as the cause of the wreck or the identity of those involved was not immediately available. This story will be updated when more information is available.
