KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A man was killed in a single-car crash late Friday night near Hall of Fame Drive, according to a release from the Knoxville Police Department.

KPD said at around 10:15 p.m., officers responded to the area of the exit ramp to Hall of Fame Drive from I-40 West where a car had run off the road and into a wooded area. The car had caught fire with the driver trapped inside, according to the release.

Responding officers then attempted to rescue the driver from the car, busting out windows to pull the victim out while also using fire extinguishers to douse the flames. KPD said the fire overtook the vehicle and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

"KPD crash reconstruction investigators and crime scene technicians responded to the scene in addition to Medical Examiner’s Office personnel," KPD said.

KPD also said the victim had not yet been positively identified and was transported to the Knoxville Regional Forensic Center for further examination. The department said the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
