94-year-old Korean War veteran honored with peace medal during ceremony in Tellico Village

Eugene Chaimers was surrounded by friends and family as he received the medal.

TELLICO VILLAGE, Tenn. — A 94-year-old Korean War veteran was honored with a peace medal Monday, during a Veterans Day ceremony in Tellico Village.

Eugene Chaimers received the Korean Ambassador of Peace Medal for his service during the Korean War. The Korean War was waged from June 1950 to July 1953 and led to the deaths of around 3 million people, according to Imperial War Museums. It was presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a nonprofit that serves veterans across the country.

"It means a great deal. I've never had an award before. I was following other young men, enlisting when I did, to serve my country. It's a wonderful, wonderful thing to do," he said.

He is preparing to turn 95 years old in January.
