East Tennessee warming centers set to open this week amid frigid temperatures

Several warming centers will be open to the public on Tuesday through Thursday as an icy cold front brings low temperatures this week.

TENNESSEE, USA — As frigid temperatures make their way through East Tennessee this week, several warming centers will be opening to the public for those in need of a safe, warm place to stay. 

Here is a list of sites that will be open this week: 

Knox County

The Knoxville Police Department said several overnight warming centers will be open Tuesday and Thursday as below-average temperatures are expected this week.

The four sites open Tuesday night and Thursday include: 

  • Salvation Army Building, 409 N. Broadway
  • Vestal United Methodist Church, 115 Ogle Avenue
  • Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church, 2700 E. Magnolia Avenue
  • Cokesbury Church at 9919 Kingston Pike 

The warming centers are opening in partnership with the Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability.

Monroe County

The Monroe County Justice Center will serve as an overnight warming center on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Center's lobby will be open on the jail side from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for anyone needing a warm and safe place to stay. 

The Justice Center is located at 4500 New Highway 68. 

Blount County

The First Baptist Church of Maryville will serve as an overnight warming center Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.  The Blount County Mayor's Office says that a hot evening meal and breakfast will be provided. 

First Baptist Church is located at 202 W. Lamar Alexander Parkway. 

Hamblen County

Ministerial Association Temporary Shelter is opening warming stations Tuesday-Friday. They will open by 8:30 p.m. and close at 6 a.m. 

If people would like to help, consider dropping off individual snacks, crackers, drinks and coffee. 

The warming station is located at 733 W. Main St. in Morristown.
