KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — During the summer, the Knoxville Parks and Recreation Aquatics team is offering swimming lessons to help families stay safe in the water and prevent drownings.
The lessons are $60 and are held at the Inskip Swimming Pool at 4204 Bruhin Road. They emphasize drowning prevention and the lessons show participants how to stay safe in the water. On the first day of lessons, children are pre-tested and put into groups according to their skill level.
Knoxville is an American Red Cross Centennial city ambassador, meaning that lessons are meant to be affordable for everyone. Scholarships are available for anyone who may not be able to afford the $60 fee.
"We already take adults for free. They've paid a lifetime already of fear, and not having the freedom to swim. So, we believe that folks over the age of 18 deserve an opportunity to learn and not be scared. So, whether you speak English or not, it matters not to us," said Randy Love, an aquatics specialist.
In the fall, winter and spring, swimming lessons are held at the Williams Creek Community Center and Pool. It is located at 2235 Dandridge Avenue.
