The Knoxville Police Department is investigating after an officer shot at a person in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve.

Just after 5 a.m. Sunday, a Knoxville Police Department officer was responding to a call near Lakeside Street and Ace Miller Way in East Knoxville. Reports say that someone inside a silver car had driven by and shot at nearby homes, then crashed into a Chilhowee Park fence on Lakeside Street. Police said the suspect then ran from the car after the crash.

The officer who got to the scene ran into the man they suspected was the driver. The man shot at the officer at least once and the officer shot back at him. KPD said the man then ran into the woods off Lakeside Street.

No one was hurt in the shooting.

After a search of the area, the male suspect was found unresponsive in the woods. KPD officers gave the man Narcan and he regained consciousness and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He's been released from the hospital and is being interviewed by KPD Investigations Bureau detectives.

KPD consulted with the Knox County District Attorney's office about the shooting exchange between the officer and the man. Since there were no injuries reported, the investigation will be led by KPD's internal investigations team.

The KPD Office of Professional Standards has also started an internal investigation to see if the officer acted within department policies.

The officer involved, identified in warrants as Caleb Bailey, has been placed on routine administrative leave.

The investigation is ongoing.
