Knoxville National Cemetery holds annual wreath-laying ceremony for Memorial Day

"I want to honor those who have risked their lives for us and our freedom so this is my way of giving back to them," said Avery Mead, a 12-year-old at the event.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville community leaders held an annual wreath-laying ceremony on Monday to remember the servicemembers who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country. Participants placed wreaths and flags near the graves of servicemembers during the event.

A retired U.S. Army colonel was the keynote speaker at the event that was held at the Knoxville National Cemetery. Taps were played during the ceremony. A 12-year-old, Avery Mead, attended the event and said it's important to honor the lives of veterans.

"I want to honor those who have risked their lives for us and our freedom so this is my way of giving back to them," said Mead.

Mead is part of a local group called "Project Healing Waters" which supports veterans through healing with fly fishing.
