KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville leaders said the city is hoping to hear from community members on how it should spend around $15 million in federal housing funds.

It's a part of Knoxville's Consolidated Plan, designed to help Knoxville address housing issues and community development needs. The plan is meant to help guide decisions on how the city could use federal funding to address housing issues. The city said it would need to show its plan to the United States Housing and Urban Development Department by next May. The plan stretches several years, with different priorities for each year.

The plan would include priorities from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2029. Knoxville leaders launched an online survey that people can take to share their ideas for the future of the city's housing. It's available in English and Spanish.

In January 20205,  the city will present the results of its community engagement work and will draft the needs identified by the community for both the first year of the Consolidated Plan and its full duration. People will have a chance to discuss and ask questions about the plan at the meeting, the city said.

Knoxville receives several different kinds of federal HUD funding, such as money from a Community Development Block Grant that can be used to fund improvements to affordable housing, economic development or public infrastructure.

The city also gets HOME Investment Partnerships Program grants, meant to help eligible new homebuyers get money for down payments. The money can also be used to provide tenant-based rental assistance or home rehabilitation financing.
