Knoxville City Council approves $3.5 million contract for Augusta Quarry amenities

The second phase of the Augusta Quarry project involves building bathhouses, kiosks and improvements to a pedestrian bridge.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville City Council is met on Tuesday to discuss an agenda that features several proposals involving ongoing construction projects.

One of the proposals involves spending around $3.578 million on the second phase of construction for amenities at the Augusta Quarry in Fort Dickerson Park. That proposal passed on Tuesday. The second phase involves building bathhouses and kiosks, and building improvements to a pedestrian path leading down to the water. Crews would also build a waterfront pier and floating docks.

During the first phase of the project, crews installed a new traffic signal and made improvements to the park entrance. They also made improvements to a parking lot, and a pedestrian plaza, and installed underground utilities from the park entrance to Augusta Avenue stretching to the parking lot at Fort Dickerson Quarry.

The city would sign a contract with Southern Constructions, Inc., as part of the project. The work would need to be completed within 270 days from when the city tells crews they can start on the work.

Another proposal involves spending around $103,700 to expand the city's electric vehicle charging capabilities. As part of the agreement, Edison Electric, LLC, would install 30 parts in the City County Building's parking garage, meant to support the electric vehicles in Knoxville's fleet.

The city council will also consider whether to spend $650,000 to buy 12 tracts of property for the Woodland Avenue Complete Streets Project. The project includes building bike lanes, sidewalks and pedestrian crossing improvements. The project will also install upgrades along East Woodland Avenue, making the area more accessible between Glenwood Avenue and North Broadway.
