Knox County Parks and Recreation officials are reeling in the budget for a BMX track planned for South Knoxville.
The project, which is part of an overhaul at South Doyle Middle School, includes a BMX track and several sporting fields.
City leaders initially expected it to cost $750,000. In March, the city revealed it could cost hundreds of thousands more.
A department spokesperson said that $500,000 could come from projects that are finished already or if there is any surplus from the budget.
"When we close the books on the current fiscal year budget, typically we have a surplus," said Parks & Recreation Community Relations Manager Mike Donila. "That money kind of gets spread around the departments, as well as put back in the reserves. So potentially, we'll use some of that surplus as well."
The Parks and Recreation Department said ADA oversights alone added $350,000 to the budget. Leaders now hope work will begin on the actual track this summer. The opening day is now set for Spring 2019.
