Knox County event to help drivers get their licenses back is being postponed to February

The fair was set for Saturday. It's being put off because of weather.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A planned "reinstatement fair" to help Knox Countians get their driver's license reinstated is being postponed from Saturday to February.

The exact date will be announced later, said Knox County Criminal Court Clerk Mike Hammond.

The event was supposed to be held Saturday morning on the Pellissippi State campus on Magnolia Avenue in Knoxville.

But because of ongoing bad weather and the threat of more bad weather, authorities decided it would be better to wait until next month, Hammond said.

More than 1,000 people responded with interest after the proposed fair was announced last week, he said.

The event is targeted for Knox Countians specifically.

The licenses of at least 70,000 Knox Countians have either been suspended or revoked, according to Hammond. Often licenses are suspended or revoked because a defendant has failed to pay court assessments.

But suspensions and revocations don't deter many people from still getting behind the wheel. Out of necessity -- for work, for example -- many who have lost their license keep driving, subjecting them to even harsher consequences.

Hammond told WBIR there are ways that people with a suspended or revoked license may be able to get it back, including by paying any back fees or fines that are owed.

Knox County has the second highest rate in the state of residents with a suspended or revoked license.

When the fair takes place, Hammond said, officials expect that many of those who attend already qualify and will receive their license on-site. In other situations, local and state officials can meet with people to talk about what requirements are needed to get them back on the road.
