KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — The Knox County Sheriff's Office said deputies shot a man Wednesday afternoon as they were "attempting to negotiate" with him.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a release that just after 5 p.m. on May 8, deputies responded to a tip of a man at Clayton Park threatening to harm himself. TBI said a short time later, deputies made contact with the man who was armed with a gun.
TBI said shots were fired during the encounter, and the reasons for those shots were still under investigation. No deputies were injured during the shooting.
The Knox County Sheriff's Office said the man was taken to a hospital after the shooting, and his condition was not known as of around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The TBI said this shooting marks the 19th time this year it has been called in to investigate a shooting that involved law enforcement. In a release, the bureau said it would provide additional information about the shooting after gathering preliminary information.
TBI agents are working to determine the series of events leading up to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.
"Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for her further review and consideration," said TBI.
TBI said any updates on the investigation will be posted on its website.
Additional information, such as the identity of the man and additional information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, was not immediately available. This story will be updated when more information is available.
