KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — People across Knox County and East Tennessee have spent several days at home after a winter storm dropped inches of snow and layers of ice onto the area. The storm created dangerous driving conditions, and crews went to work trying to clear them.
The county's Senior Director of Engineering and Public Works, Jim Snowden, said as of Wednesday evening the county had used around 1,500 tons of salt on the roads. Snowden said the salt was valued at around $200,000. He also said the county spent around $50,000 on overtime for crew members, fuel and repairs for equipment.
He said over five days, the county spent an estimated $250,000 responding to the winter storm.
Another round of wintry weather is in the forecast for Thursday evening, expected to bring freezing rain that could cause ice to glaze over roads. It is expected to last into Friday morning, and some areas of East Tennessee could see flurries of snow from it too.
