KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — On April 17, Clarence Brown Theatre is set to host a showing of "Kinky Boots," a humorous and iconic play that follows a man who tries to save his family's failing shoe businesses by working with a drag performer to create a new kind of footwear.
It is the first night in a series of showings running through May 5. The April 17 show also benefits a nonprofit in Knoxville that uplifts the area's LGBTQ+ community, as well as the city as a whole. People had the chance to buy pay-what-you-can tickets that night, with half of the proceeds going towards Knox Pride. The nonprofit said attendees buy tickets through a unique link.
The day before the curtains rose, Knox Pride said tickets had sold out. It also said on April 20, fans of the show have a chance to enjoy a special event with the stars of the show at South Press. That event, "An Evening with Kinky Boots" starts at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets through the Clarence Brown Theatre's website for opening night are around $29. Knox Pride said that anyone who wanted to see Kinky Boots but couldn't afford it may also be able to take advantage of some scholarship tickets. People can email info@knoxpride.com for more information about the show.
The play follows Charlie Price, a young businessman who dreams of living in London until his father dies and he inherits a failing shoe factory. He starts working to try to save the factory and finds inspiration after meeting a drag performer and becoming friends. Together, they work to save the factory and create new footwear.
People can buy tickets for other showings through the Clarence Brown Theatre's website.
