16-year-old student hospitalized on first day back to school after hit-and-run at school bus stop, KCSO has person of interest

Officials said a passerby noticed the girl lying on the ground at about the same time the school bus arrived.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — A high school student was in the hospital for injuries after a hit-and-run at a school bus stop Thursday morning, according to the Knox County Sheriff's Office. Family members said the student was okay and recovering.

It happened on the first day back to school for Knox County. Authorities told WBIR that a witness saw the 16-year-old at the bus stop at 7:13 a.m., but the sheriff's office did not receive the 911 call until around 7:30 a.m.

KCSO responded to the intersection of Thorton Drive and Hughlan Drive in Farragut. They said a passerby noticed the girl lying on the ground at about the same time the school bus arrived. The girl was then taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

The description of the vehicle that hit the victim is unknown. The sheriff's office said it was following up on leads and was searching for the person responsible. On Aug. 9, it said that a person of interest had been identified.

The girl's guardian told 10News the 16-year-old is OK, but their family is asking for prayers.

Neighbors said they shared Ring camera footage with each other to find answers on the hit-and-run.

KCSO advises if you live in the area, to check your cameras to see if you have captured any footage of the hit-and-run. Anyone wanting to provide information can remain anonymous. The number to call is 865-215-2243.

WBIR reached out to Knox County Schools to speak with Superintendent Jon Rysewyk to learn more. KCS responded by saying Rysewyk didn't appear to be available Thursday because he had a "full schedule."
