KCS launches app to help families monitor student's online activity

The Qustodio program provides families additional visibility regarding their child's activity on a school device.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knox County Schools is offering an app that will help families manage screen time, monitoring browsing habits and promote safe digital usage.

The Qustodio app provides parents with additional resources to supervise school-issued Chromebooks. According to KCS, Qustodio allows families to:

  • Manage and understand their students’ technology usage
  • Pause the internet to control screen time outside of school hours
  • Gain visibility to their students’ browsing activity on their Chromebooks while at home
  • Receive email summaries of usage
  • Read digital safety guidance from experts

Setting up an account on Qustodio does not affect protection measures already in place on student Chromebooks. Instead, creating an account provides families additional visibility regarding their child's activity on a school device.

“Knox County Schools is committed to providing the tools students need for academic success in a digital environment,” Chief Technology Officer Freddie Cox said. “We also recognize that parents and family members should have confidence that these tools are being used responsibly, and Qustodio will equip families with the transparency they need to support their student.”

The program is free for a student Chromebook and up to two family devices. Once registered, users can invite additional parents or guardians.

Premium features can be added for an additional cost.

KCS families can sign up at https://auth.qustodio.com/en/my-school/ using the parent email address on file.
