KAT honors Edye Ellis, WBIR's first Black anchor, during Black History Month

"Ellis proved to be a role model and always took time out for those who looked up to her," KAT said on social media.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — On Wednesday, the Knoxville Area Transit system posted on social media to honor a woman whose career was marked by East Tennessee news reporting.

She began her career at WBIR in 1982 and worked on programming for the World's Fair. She would later become a co-anchor to Bill Williams, a figure whose legacy has impacted the community far and wide.

"Straight from the heart is more than just a slogan, it's something Ellis embodied. Thank you for serving East Tennessee," the transit system said on social media.

Ellis brought viewers to different parts of Knoxville and East Tennessee, highlighting stories that impacted communities and connecting with people from many walks of life.

"Channel 10 and you — together, we can take on the world," she said in one broadcast.
