Jury acquits driver in triple fatal crash

A Sevier County jury acquitted a man accused of causing a car crash that killed three members of the same family.

The trial for Shaun Russell Dunlap began Thursday. He was charged with seven counts of vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated reckless assault.

Prosecutors presented their case on Thursday. Defense attorneys gave their presentation on Friday and the jury found Dunlap not guilty on all counts.

Investigators said Dunlap crashed into a car carrying the Dembla family from India on Wears Valley Road in July 2012.

Ashish Dembla, 24, Dr. Sat Pal Dembla, 57, and Anjali Dembla, 51, all died.

Kanika Dembla, who was 20 at the time, survived with severe injuries.

Troopers reported at the time that Dunlap told them he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
