Historic Jellico funeral home a 'total loss' after Wednesday fire

The Cox and Son Funeral Home said no injuries were reported and it was able to save most important documents, including death certificates and prearranged files.

JELLICO, Tenn. — A funeral home in Jellico is a total loss after a fire Wednesday fire afternoon, according to Jellico Mayor Sandy Terry.

She said the fire started at around 2:15 p.m. and no injuries were reported. Cox and Son Funeral Home said in a statement posted on social media that it was able to save most important documents inside the building, such as death certificates and other prearranged files. 

The funeral home said it has been in operation since 1910, serving families in East Tennessee and Southeast Kentucky.

"All of us at Cox & Son Funeral Home are devastated at the fire and loss we have experienced today. Despite the circumstances, we are thankful that there are no injuries and that we were able to save most important documents including prearranged files, death certificates, and other important papers. We want to express our sincere appreciation to all of the first responders, fire and rescue personnel, law enforcement and others who worked diligently to contain the fire. We also want to convey our heartfelt gratitude to all of our friends, family members, and neighbors who came to our assistance during our time of need thank you. We will forever be grateful. Also, we want all of you to know that we have a contingency plan in place if anyone should need our service. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers."

Terry also released a statement thanking the Jellico Rescue Squad, Jellico Fire Department, Jellico Police Department, Jellico Utilities, Campbell County Ambulance Service, LaFollette Fire Department, Caryville Fire Department, Jellico Street Department, South Whitley Fire Department and all first responders.
