New details released about fatal zinc mining accident in Jefferson County

The Mine Safety and Health Administration classified the accident as "machinery".

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A zinc miner who had only been on the job two weeks was killed in an accident at the Young Mine in Jefferson County on May 18.

According to a preliminary accident report from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the victim was Brandon L. Rosky, 35.

The report gives more information about how the accident happened. A trailer carrying a diesel pump broke was being towed up an incline roadway when the tow hitch suddenly broke. Rosky was walking behind the trailer and was fatally injured when he was hit by the trailer.

The note reports that this is preliminary data only and is not the final conclusion regarding the cause of the accident.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration classified the accident as "machinery".

The zinc mine is operated by Nyrstar Nevada.

It's the same company that operates a Knox County mine where a Kentucky man died in February.
