TBI: Investigation ongoing after one-year-old dies in Rocky Top vehicle fire

Two children and one adult were also hurt in the fire and transported for treatment, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

ROCKY TOP, Tenn. — Update (7/8): The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed a one-year-old child died in a vehicle fire on Norris Freeway in Rocky Top. 

The fire happened on Friday, July 5. The TBI said it's investigating the fire alongside the Rocky Top Police Department. 

The one-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Two children and one adult were also hurt in the fire and transported for treatment, according to the TBI. 

Foul play isn't suspected, however, the investigation into the cause of the fire is active, the TBI said.

A person was found dead following a vehicle fire on Norris Freeway in Rocky Top, according to the Rocky Top Police Department.

The police department, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Anderson County Sheriff's Office are investigating. Few details have been released yet about the age or gender of the person found dead. The fire occurred Friday afternoon in a busy commercial area of the city.

According to police, the unspecified vehicle was found burning at Norris Freeway and Mason Street. One witness said there were two booms. That witness grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran to the car, before working to help a child escape, according to a statement from the witness.

Authorities shut down Norris Freeway there, and it was likely to remain closed for several hours, according to police.

"Due to an ongoing investigation no other information can be released at this time," police said in a Facebook statement.
