KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Another round of wintry weather hit Knoxville Friday, bringing frigid temperatures and another round of snow after the city was buffeted by several inches of snow earlier in the week.
The weather created dangerous driving conditions across the city — freezing roads with thick, snow-covered ice and black ice overnight. Throughout the week, people asked whether mail would be delivered.
The U.S. Postal Service said it is continuing to deliver mail in Knoxville "where it is safe to do so." A full statement from the USPS is available below.
“Letter Carriers are continuing to deliver all available mail and packages in Knoxville and throughout Tennessee where it is safe to do so.
Any amount of snow and ice can cause a dangerous situation for letter carriers. Keeping a clear path to and around mailboxes will help letter carriers continue delivery as well as keep them safe from potential slipping and/or injuries. Customers can help ensure their letter carrier has safe access to mailboxes and front porches during deliveries by providing a clear path.
Mail delivery may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways pose hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Customers who have curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snowplows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers and postal vehicles.
The U.S. Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort. Any curtailed mail is attempted the next delivery day.”
The USPS also said that people who need help with mailing needs can reach out to the USPS by calling their local post office, or by calling 1-800-275-8777, or 1-800-ASK-USPS. The postal service can also be reached online.
Other delivery services were impacted by the snow. UPS said package delivery was impacted in Loudon, Madisonville, Tellico Village, Sweetwater and more. Information about where UPS delivery has been impacted by the snow is available here.
