KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — This is the 35th year that Ijams Nature Center has put on an event where volunteers clean the Tennessee River.
Ijams River Rescue is an event where volunteers get the chance to get out, get active and clean up the river and its creeks and streams to make Knoxville an even better place to live, work and play.
It brings together hundreds of volunteers to remove between 10 to 40 tons of trash from the Tennessee River’s shorelines and its tributary creeks. In 2022, about 557 volunteers removed over 21 tons of garbage from 44 sites, according to Ijams.
They even said they have a few more tires to add to the thousands they've collected throughout the years.
"Ijams dreams of a day when River Rescue is no longer necessary, but today was not that day," Ijams said in a post. "A huge thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who braved the rain to make our community better!"
