How you can help the family of Blount County Deputy Greg McCowan

A fund has been set up through the Tennessee Police Benevolent Association to accept financial help from the public.

MARYVILLE, Tenn — If you want to help the family of Blount County Deputy Greg McCowan, a link to a fund has been set up through the Tennessee Police Benevolent Association.

Since a gunman shot and killed McCowan and wounded Deputy Shelby Eggers while they were on duty Thursday night, people have been asking how they can help McCowan's family.

The Blount County Sheriff's Office says in a Facebook post that a link has been set up through the TPBA website.

All funds received by the TPBA will go to his family, according to the TPBA.

Here's the link to help.

"If you are so moved, a donation of any amount to help his family would be appreciated," a message on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page reads.

McCowan, 43, leaves behind, among others, his children, Cayley and Cayden, and a granddaughter, Ella.

Smith Funeral Home in Maryville is handling McCowan's arrangements.

He became a deputy in 2020.

Eggers was shot in the leg but was treated and released.

The deputies were conducting a traffic stop on Kenneth Wayne DeHart, Jr., 42, on Sevierville Road in Maryville when DeHart shot them, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. They had tried to Tase him, according to authorities.

DeHart faces murder and attempted murder charges in Thursday night's shooting.

He fled the scene after shooting the deputies, according to the TBI. His Lexus was later found abandoned in the Wildwood area of Blount County.

DeHart, who has a history of violence, is considered armed and dangerous. Multiple police agencies are taking part in the search for the Alcoa man.

His brother and his girlfriend have been charged with being accessories after the fact in DeHart's case.
