CPD identifies woman who died after Highway 61 wreck

The crash happened in the 2000 block of N. Charles Seivers Blvd. near Alpine Drive on May 4, according to the Clinton Police Department.

CLINTON, Tenn. — The Clinton Police Department has identified the woman who died in a fatal crash on Highway 61 on Saturday morning.

The crash happened in the 2000 block of N. Charles Seivers Blvd. near Alpine Drive. CPD, along with the Clinton Fire Department and the Anderson County EMS, responded to the scene at around 11:43 a.m.

An investigation revealed a Honda Civic, driven by George Cooper, was traveling east when he failed to make a curve. CPD said Cooper's car crossed the median into the oncoming westbound traffic.

Cooper's car then struck a Ford Escape, driven by Deborah Smith, CPD said. The impact caused the car to be redirected and overturned, stopping in the ditch line in the westbound lane.

According to Clinton Police, there were two people in the Ford.

Everyone involved in the crash suffered injuries and was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. But Smith was declared dead upon arrival, CPD said.

CPD has not given an update on the two people who were injured in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
