Cleveland High school basketball players suspended for sexual behavior at Oak Ridge tournament

School officials say a group of 12 players from Cleveland, both male and female, left their assigned rooms after curfew.

Five East Tennessee basketball players are suspended from school and investigators are working to determine if any laws were broken after the teens broke curfew and engaged in "various degrees of consensual sexual contact."

According to a press release from Cleveland High School, the boys and girls basketball teams were at a tournament in Oak Ridge this past weekend. They were staying in a hotel, and while chaperones confirmed all the students were in their assigned room by curfew, that didn't last.

Sometime after 2 a.m., school officials have determined that a group of 12 players, both male and female, left their assigned rooms. Seven of those students just broke curfew, and could face suspension from the team.

The school investigation found that the other five students engaged in sexual behavior, violating school board policy. They were suspended for five days and could face suspension or dismissal from the team.

A police report has been filed with the Cleveland Police Department, who will determine if any criminal actions took place.

A spokesperson for Oak Ridge Police Department said they had not been informed or called about any incident involving the Cleveland basketball players.

The school has determined that all procedures were followed on the trip, and that the students were properly chaperoned by both male and female coaches.

Cleveland is in Bradley County, northeast of Chattanooga.
