ID=29612153ID=29621327(WBIR - MARYVILLE) The Blount County Animal Shelter took in some 76 evacuated dogs and cats from owners who had to flee as a result of the overnight CSX rail car fire.

Many were picked up at Heritage High School, which served as one of the designated shelters and community centers Thursday for people forced to leave their homes.

Blount County Commissioner Steve Samples said citizens have been outstanding in stepping up to help, donating hundreds of pounds of food. Numerous cages also were loaned to the shelter to hold animals.

The shelters can hold up to 75 large dogs and 100 cats, but officials also have a plan in place if they hit capacity, including partnering with PetSafe Village in Knoxville and working with local animal foster families.

They were also asking for volunteers to help foster animals so they could make room for the evacuated pets. They are moving to a 24-hour operation, and need volunteers to work 8-hour shifts, from 3 pm-11 pm and 11 pm-7 am.

The shelter is located at 233 Currie Ave. in Maryville.

Another option for evacuated pets is the Hound Hideaway. They posted on the WBIR Facebook page that they are open and accepting pets at no charge for those that have been evacuated. Pets must be up to date on vaccines, and if owners don't have proof they will call and verify with the vet. They ask that If you would like to bring your dog in, call them at (865) 724-2619.
