A Cocke County woman is accused of stealing almost $200-thousand dollars from a local business.

Newport Police arrested Patricia Jones on Monday following a grand jury indictment. She's charged with theft of property over $60-thousand dollars.

Police say Jones was the bookkeeper for the Cocke Farmers Co-Op.

In February, the store's manager contacted police because he thought an employee was stealing money. An audit later revealed almost $190-thousand dollars in missing funds.

Police say they were able to link that missing money to Jones.

"There's always a paper trail. if you start handling money, receipts, books, there's going to be a paper trial," said Detective Captain Lynn Shults of the Newport Police Dept.

Police say after being confronted by managers, Jones resigned from her position. She was the only employee at the co-op in charge of handling the register and money.
