JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tennessee — A new high-tech crime lab in Jefferson County will help agencies all over the region solve crimes involving computers, cars, phones and cameras.

Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office opened the lab on the Carson-Newman campus in the Henderson Humanities building on Monday.

Investigators can bring any digital electronic there and use software to copy files off the device. They can then use that information to solve crimes.

"The training side of it is helping getting the proper training for the detectives that are assigned or the officers that are assigned here, so they can conduct those examinations properly," JCSO Deputy Michael Menz said. "And also, if they're doing investigations, they're conducting those properly with the right resources."

JCSO runs the lab but works in cooperation with several agencies across East Tennessee and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The new lab is open and organizers said it's already assisted in solving several cases.
