Local agencies, TBI investigating after 20-year-old dies in White Pine road rage shooting

The road rage incident began on Roy Messer Highway (Highway 66) and ended in a shooting at a red light near I-81, the White Pine Police Department said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Officials are investigating a fatal road rage shooting that happened early Monday morning, the White Pine Police Department said. 

Officers responded to Roy Messer Highway (Highway 66) at Exit 4 near I-81 around 5:30 a.m. in White Pine. One person, a 20-year-old male, was killed in the shooting, according to White Pine Police Chief Chad Cotter. 

Cotter said the road rage incident started on Roy Messer Highway and ended in a shooting at a red light near I-81. The suspect is a 59-year-old male. He stayed on the scene, is in custody and is cooperating with officials and the investigation. 

WPPD said the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are helping in the investigation.
