Police release new details about Tuesday standoff in Jefferson City

Jefferson City Police Chief Andy Dossett said a domestic call at 5:30 a.m. turned into an armed barricaded situation on Morrisett Avenue in Jefferson City.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Editor's Note: The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office initially reported the girlfriend was held hostage during the standoff. The Jefferson City Police Department, who is leading the investigation, later told 10News the girlfriend was not held hostage.

Update (7/31 11:00 a.m.): 

The Jefferson City Police Department has released more details regarding a standoff at a Jefferson City home Tuesday morning. 

The suspect, an armed male, threatened a woman. The woman fled to a nearby neighbor and called 911, according to JCPD.

Officers and negotiators asked the male to exit the house repeatedly but he refused. JCPD deployed chemical munitions and continued negotiating without success, according to JCPD. 

The department's special response team removed the suspect and discovered that he appeared to be suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. JCPD said he continued to be "uncooperative" and was transported to a local trauma center for treatment. 

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investgation at the request of the JCPD and the Fourth Judicial District Attorney General's Office.

A suspect is in custody after a standoff at a Jefferson City home Tuesday morning, according to the Jefferson City Police Department. 

Jefferson City Police Chief Andy Dossett said a domestic call at 5:30 a.m. turned into an armed barricaded situation on Morrisett Avenue in Jefferson City.  SWAT and other tactical officials were on the scene and nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. 

According to officials, the suspect and their girlfriend were in the house. Dossett said after officers arrived on the scene, the girlfriend ran from the home.

The Jefferson County Police Department is the lead agency in the investigation, along with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.
