Hamblen County officials warn on expected increase in vehicle burglaries during holiday season

The majority of thefts in Hamblen County, so far, have happened in unlocked vehicles, according to Hamblen County Sheriff Chad Mullins.

HAMBLEN COUNTY, Tenn. — Hamblen County officials are encouraging people to be vigilant and use common sense when it comes to keeping your vehicle safe this season.

According to Hamblen County Sheriff Chad Mullins, the majority of thefts in Hamblen County, so far, have happened in unlocked vehicles.

“We're seeing instances of people leaving valuables in their car: purses, jewelry, medications, shopping bags, wrapped gifts, etc.," Hamblen County Sheriff Chad Mullins said. "When thieves see these items, the first thing they do is check the doors. When they're unlocked there’s no barrier to stop them from helping themselves to your belongings. Even if you’re parked in your own driveway, the smart thing to do is always lock your doors.”

According to HCSO, locking your vehicle doors can help safeguard your belongings, but the best thing to do is either lock them in your trunk or take them inside.

“A lot of times thieves will take items from unlocked vehicles just for the thrill of the steal,” he said.

Sheriff Mullins also wants to remind people that warm-up thefts are common during cold weather due to people starting their vehicles and going back inside while they warm up.

“A running, unlocked and unattended vehicle is a prime target for a car thief," Mullins said. "Some of these warm-up thefts are random, but usually a criminal will watch you and your daily habits, seeing exactly what time each day you start your car and walk away from it."
