A Cocke County man admitted to deputies that he shot his wife in their Newport home, according to a Cocke County Sheriff's Office release.

Officials said Toby D. Dunn, 39, shot his wife Crystal Dunn, 32, multiple times at their home on Lane Drive on Wednesday. The 39-year-old suspect claimed it was in self defense, but the wife told deputies that she was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

A search of the house turned up weapons, drugs paraphernalia, a small amount of marijuana, and an indoor grow room.

Authorities removed a 14-year-old child with disabilities, along with an aggressive bull dog, from the home.

Investigators said additional charges are pending.

The sheriff's office brought in the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to assist in the investigation.
