Mayor Bill Brittain has confirmed that the budget committee is considering moving the wheel tax back to the general fund and away from Hamblen County Schools.
The move would put about $720,000 back into the general fund.
The committee is considering the move to lower property tax. The property tax would be 22 cents without the wheel tax and 17 cents with the wheel tax in the general fund.
Last night the committee made three motions regarding the wheel tax, but all of them failed. They will be discussing the tax at their next meeting on Thursday.
Once a decision is reached, the budget will go into commission.
