Gym floor at new Alcoa High ruined after pipe burst

A burst pipe means a brand new gym floor for Alcoa High School, just months after the new school opened.

The custodian spotted the damage last Wednesday, and crews have been hard at work making repairs ever since.

Principal Becky Stone said water had been standing on the gym floor for 15 hours, and it damaged the wood beyond repair.

She was shocked at the extent of the damage, but was thankful it happened during the summer instead of when school was in session.

"It took my breath. It's a brand new building, so it's like your first crash in a new car. It just takes your breath," she said.

There was also some water damage to the locker room and other parts of the building, but the gym floor is the biggest loss. Stone hopes the repairs will be complete by the time kids return to class on July 25, but thinks it likely that the floor will not be ready when school starts.

If that's the case, P.E. classes will be held outside on nice days, and in classrooms in bad weather.

Students and staff just moved into the new school building in April.
