The Greeneville Police Department and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are responding to the scene of an officer-involved shooting that killed a Cocke County corrections officer.
According to the GPD, it happened at the Lowes on East Andrew Johnson Highway around 5:30 p.m.
The TBI said it sent agents to investigate.
According to TBI spokesperson Leslie Earhart, a Greeneville police officer responded to a domestic hit-and-run at the Lowes – saying the suspect was identified as Cocke County corrections officer Travis Mullins, 29.
According to Earhart, investigators believe Mullins was off-duty at the time and targeting a woman he had been dating.
When the Greeneville officer encountered Mullins, they said he was still in his uniform and armed with a gun.
The Greeneville officer was able to disarm Mullins and then attempted to arrest him, when they said Mullins was able to somehow get inside his vehicle and grab a second gun.
Earhart said Mullins pointed the gun at the Greeneville officer, and the officer then shot Mullins -- killing him. The Greeneville officer was not hurt.
The TBI said the investigation is still active and ongoing.
Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes responded shortly after the TBI briefing, calling the shooting a 'sad situation.'
"It is with a heavy heart that one of our own employees and friend Travis Mullins is deceased. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Travis Mullins and for the Greeneville Police department. This is a sad situation for everyone involved. We ask for your prayers and support for everyone involved as we go through this tragic situation," he said.
