Greene Co. deputies rescue injured 81-year-old hiker on Margarette Falls trail

The Greene County Sheriff's Office said the man had fallen and may have had a broken collarbone.

GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. — The Greene County Sheriff's Office said an injured 81-year-old hiker was rescued Wednesday after deputies received calls that the man had fallen.

According to a release from GCSO, calls about the man were received at around 3 p.m. The release said first responders were called to the Margarette Falls trail where the man had fallen and was thought to have a broken collarbone. GCSO said he was around halfway up the 1.2-mile trail.

Ryan Caron, a deputy, responded to the call and walked up the trail. He and Sheriff Wesley Holt met the hiker and helped him down to the parking area, where they waited for EMS to arrive. He was taken to the Greeneville Community Hospital.

“He headed up the trail hoping he could help.  While walking down the trail with the injured hiker, Deputy Caron learned he was a Vietnam veteran.  Being a veteran himself, Deputy Caron and him shared stories from different decades of military service,” said Holt in the release. “Deputy Ryan Caron’s actions were courageous, and he is to be commended.”
