GPD identifies decomposing body found in a culvert in Greeneville

The department said it believed the body had been there for around a week "due to the state of decay."

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Update (7/9): 

The Greeneville Police Department identified the body found lying in a culvert on July 6. 

The body was identified as  63-year-old Tony Adkins Melton, according to GPD. It's believed Melton's body was there for about a week "due to the state of decay." 

Melton's cause of death hasn't been determined, as officials are still waiting on autopsy results, GPD said.

The Greeneville Police Department said in a press release it responded to the 1700 block of Moore Avenue around 11:20 a.m. on Saturday in response to a call of a possible dead body lying in a culvert. 

GPD said that once it arrived at the scene, it found a decomposing body. The department also said it believed the body had been there for around a week "due to the state of decay." 

"The body has been sent to the William L. Jenkins Forensic Center in Johnson City, TN, for identification and an autopsy," the department said. 

GPD said it is waiting for autopsy results to determine the cause of death, but due to the condition of the body, the department is unable to confirm anything about the age or sex. 

The investigation is ongoing with no other information, according to GPD.

"We will give updates as we find out more information," the department said. 

Information such as the identity of the victim was not immediately available. This story will be updated when more information is available.
