Girl Scouts partnering with East Tennessee animal centers to give dogs boxes of toys and treats

The Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians said donors can buy a BarkBox to donate to shelter dogs in the Knoxville area and beyond.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Girl Scouts said it is working to make sure everyone gets a treat — including dogs in need.

It said in a release that the Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians were working with animal shelters across the area to give dogs BarkBoxes as part of the troops' Fall Product Program. BarkBoxes are effectively boxes of different toys and treats that center around a specific theme.

The Girl Scouts said its BarkBox includes a Pose and Play Beret dog toy, which doubles as a wearable hat. The boxes also have Berry Trios treats, as well as a fun Girl Scout sheet about how dogs can earn "Puppy Patches." They're available for $25, and people do not need a subscription to donate.

Instead, donors in the Knoxville area can just donate BarkBoxes online in a one-time purchase. They should select a participating animal shelter when donating. Young-Williams Animal Center is one of the shelters participating in the program, along with McKamey Animal Center in Chattanooga and the Appalachian Highlands Humane Society in Johnson City.

The Girl Scout-themed boxes are available until Oct. 25.

The Girl Scouts also said in a release that its Fall Product Program isn't as expansive as the popular cookies program but still gives troops a chance to earn startup money, such as funds for uniforms, camping programs and other activities.
