Knoxville — A section of South Gay Street that was shut down for about a month for crosswalk improvements has reopened.
The city shut down the section pf the downtown street from West Summit Hill to Union Avenue on July 9. Crews worked to replace eight brick crosswalks with stamped colored concrete.
Some downtown businesses and residents took advantage of the closure, stepping off the sidewalks and out into the empty street for photos, games, and more. Some folks even said they wished the street could be closed permanently and become a pedestrian area like Market Square.
No word from the city on that idea, but Madeline Mayor Rogero tweeted Thursday that the work was complete, a whole week ahead of schedule.
