City of Gatlinburg, TWRA urging people and businesses to refrain from using real produce as fall decorations this season

Some of the examples of real produce include pumpkins, gourds, squash and removing real corn from stalks.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Based on a recommendation from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the city of Gatlinburg is recommending people and businesses refrain from using real produce as fall decorations. Examples include pumpkins, gourds, squash and removing real corn from stalks.

This is part of an ongoing effort to reduce human-bear encounters and promote the safety of bears and humans, according to the city.

Gatlinburg is known for its autumn displays which pair with the area's natural beauty and fall foliage. However, these decorations could provide an attraction for black bears.

With the city's efforts to reduce garbage as a food source for bears, real produce could lead to increased interactions, which could pose significant risks to humans, such as injuries and property damage, as well as the risk of habituated bears.

Gatlinburg recommends using alternatives to real produce, like fake pumpkins, gourds and squash. This not only helps deter bears but offers a durable and reusable option for future seasons.

In addition to the decorations, Gatlinburg advises residents and visitors to secure all trash, remove bird feeders and store pet food indoors. They also urge people to refrain from storing garbage or food in a vehicle, lock all vehicle doors and keep all windows closed.

These measures can help reduce attractants for bears and ensure a safer environment for everyone.
